Three parts, one branch. Columns are flex 0 0 15rem, so in the fixed-width shell about three fit and the later columns, Done included, fall off with no visible affordance; give the board a proper answer to the fixed shell. A collapsed column frees space the expanded ones never take, since they cannot grow; let them grow above the 15rem minimum. Decided on empty columns: auto-collapse, not hide; an empty column starts as its slim header, keeping the information and the space, one click to expand.

Fixed on main by #commit:e186d2e46a67: the board scrolls in its own box with edge fades over a clipped edge, columns grow from the 15rem floor, and an empty column starts as its collapsed header, with the reader's toggle winning for the session. The review returned three low notes: two are accepted and recorded in the commit body, and the empty-column default gained a unit test.
